The biggest asset to any business is their people which is why having a thriving team is so important. As an employer, retaining staff should be a priority and by having a good company culture, supporting them as individuals and ensuring they feel their development is at the forefront of their career, you will almost guarantee having happier staff with better longevity.
So you are probably thinking, how do I develop my employees? Aoife goes into more detail below.
Development
One of the biggest reasons why you will retain employees will be due to whether they feel fulfilled. From personal experience, I joined Thompson & Terry Recruitment on a graduate programme and have been constantly working towards new goals every month. I have also been given lots of opportunities to really grow within my role, have had promotions and am constantly looking at ways to improve.
For me, this shows that my employer cares about my career and I know that being here is great for my professional career development.
1-1 support
It is a good idea to offer 1-1 support for your team as individuals so that they are aware of what they are doing well at, but also have areas to improve. Being a manager that the team can lean on and ask for advice from is invaluable. Monitoring individual achievements and having constant communication with your team, allows your employees to feel supported and fulfilled.
At Thompson & Terry Recruitment, our MD Ben, offers a tailored 1-1 coaching/mentoring review each month. This allows the team to consistently stay on top of their goals and track their achievements – which is very encouraging and a great way to get the best out of your team!
Goals to work towards
Following on from the previous point, having clear goals to work towards really entices employees to keep pushing (you will get the best out of them, if they feel they are heading in the right direction and have something to work towards). A goal doesn’t always have to be a promotion, it could be an incentive, a gift, an acknowledgment, a salary increase etc.
Finding ways to motivate your team, will always bring you back to having clear and achievable goals set in place.
Belonging
We spend a large part of our lives at work, so it is crucial that we enjoy our jobs but also feel fulfilled and valued. Whether you manage a small or large team, every single employee deserves to feel a sense of belonging. This encourages employees to stay within the company for a longer time and in turn, results in lower staff turnover and also a real sense of togetherness among other employees
