Firstly, before I start this blog, I think it is important to reflect on and be grateful for the situation some of us (those who are furloughed) have found ourselves in. Whilst we may all be craving normality it is important that we take a step back and appreciate our managers, employers and the Government for stepping in during a very uncertain time and ensuring that we remain employed during what is a huge financial crisis for many businesses globally and specifically the UK’s economy.
According to METRO, almost 700,000 workers have lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, whilst it is frustrating not being able to work, we are very lucky to still be employed – but fingers crossed we can return to work soon!
What to do:
● Keeping Busy
I think keeping yourself busy is the most important whilst being furloughed. Although there is not much to be doing, you need to be keeping your mind busy! It is a great time to take up and start a new hobby, perhaps baking, cooking new recipes, reading, going to the gym, going for long walks, seeing friends and family (albeit safely) – hopefully these ideas will help keep you sane!
● Keeping Up Communication
It is important you don’t feel like you are not a valued employee after being off work for months. Therefore, I believe it is so important to have check-in days with your manager or some colleagues a couple of times a month, to firstly ensure you are all okay, but also to keep on top of work/any news/updates and to help you feel like you are still in the loop! Equally, this has been a really lonely time for lots of people, so keep up communication and help each other along!
● Getting Involved in Webinars
Zoom has been a fantastic tool that we have all used for so many different reasons over the past few months. A great way to utilise your time is to sign up to and get involved in free webinars that lots of businesses are running – not only will this benefit you, it could also really inspire you and give you an insight into what you may want to do in the future or equally, how you want to improve to be the best you can.
Our MD, Ben Thompson, hosted a free webinar this morning on the topic ‘How to write a CV? And STAND OUT! which we feel is more important than ever going into a recession and an incredibly competitive employment market.
Thompson & Terry Recruitment will be running more of these, so keep your eyes peeled!
